OUCS106 - Semiotics


Signifier - The headline for the article, The imagery of the minister, as well as the photographs of the houses and the text above them.

Signified - The fact that the government has decided that they are going to increase the cost of living in council houses.

Denotation - What the government is really like and peoples view of the government
The fact that the government think its acceptable to raise the cost for people who are financially unstable, a sense of arrogance and superiority on behalf of the government who think they can continue to treat the poor like this.

Connotation - It portrays the government as being "bad" and unfair against the poor. It also connotes the divide between social class in todays society. The government being seen as the upper class who have control of the situation and the lower classes who don't have the power to fight against them.
