Both images, "The Uncle Sam Range" (1876) and the second image from (1915) are examples of early Graphic Design. The first image focuses on selling a "Range" cooker although when originally looking at the image I felt that this wasn't apparent. The cooker is placed at the edge of the frame whilst a group of people and image of the world dominates the rest of the image. In contrast the second image, which focuses on recruiting young men to join the army shows how a man and his children are the focal point. The male character in the image has a distinct look of regret on his face as his children question what contribution he made in the "Great War". It is evident that this poster would have been aimed at a male audience encouraging them to fight in the war. The message from this poster is direct and straight to the point with the word "You" capitalised and underlined making the message personal to individuals. On the other hand the first image has a deeper meaning from just attempting to sell a cooker. The dates on the clock state 1776 - 1876. The hundred years represent one hundred years of Independence. There is great sense of celebration within the image as great food is being made in the range cooker along with how well the room has been furnished. The actual message being portrayed is that America is actually superior to the rest of the world, the scroll listing countries and the foods they eat is almost derogatory in the sense that other countries cannot afford to have such amazing food. There is a real sense of arrogance and superiority.
The type used in the first image is much more bold and straight to the point, it also portrays a sense of class and affluence when buying a range cooker. This would appeal to maybe the working class who would aspire to have a better lifestyle. The second image again uses a typeface that really stands out but in this case almost dominates the image as it draws the audience in making it more personal. The main message being portrayed in the image is that joining the army will ultimately make you a better person - unlike the male in the image who is being questioned by his children and is unable to tell them that he himself didn't fight in the war. The fact that the war is is suggested to be the "Great War" indicates that England will ultimately win the war and that the rest of the country will benefit from this. The setting of the image shows how well their lifestyle is a long with the way in which they are dressed and also that the young girl is reading showing that in fact that they are well educated. I would say that the type in this image is definately more obvious in this image unlike the first image as here it need to draw the audience in.
I would say that both images give a sense of celebration, the first image is celebrating one hundred years of Independence. The second image is quite optimistic as it assumed that there will be a victory which of course would call for a celebration. Both images show how men would dominate the family lifestyle as they are both focal points in the posters, more so in the first image the woman is seen to be the one who is cooking and serving the food. The entire image represents the American Dream which so many people aspired to be a part of. It is obvious that both images represent an different idea or meaning yet the way in which is put across is some what similar.
